Business / Retail

Business and Retail Experience:

In past years I have had the opportunity to work a variety of retail positions. Most of these positions ended up in some form of management. I have also owned and operated several businesses from full time mall locations to part time home operated companies.

2000-Current: AtTheFaire Web Services and Multimedia Productions (Des Moines, IA)

Home business producing TV and radio commercials for area businesses. Produced a promotional podcast for a Toyota campaign (via Pivec Advertising, Ltd.; Timonium, MD). Local clients include Sleepy Hollow Sports Park in Des Moines (winter and Halloween ads), Nebraska Renaissance Faire, Iowa Renaissance Festival, Des Moines Renaissance Faire, and Iowa Pumpkin Festival. Produced a 39 part video series documenting the construction of the Festival Park event center at Sleepy Hollow Sports Park, and another multi-part video series on their Halloween activities.

Also, web site design and hosting. This includes extensive work with Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks as well as a HTML hand coding. Hundreds of HTML pages are maintained as well as dozens of PERL CGI scripts. Other related ventures include performing at Midwest renaissance festivals (presentation skills), and extensive digital photography of various events as well as the production of promotional videos for festivals and groups.

1994-1995: Disc Jockey Music Store (Lufkin, TX)

Retail sale of audio CDs and tapes. Hired on as hourly employee, promoted to assistant manager. Duties included customer service, sales, open/closing of store, daily paperwork, and making bank deposits.

1993-1994: Hastings Books, Music and Video (Lufkin, TX)

Hired as cash register clerk in this retail combo store then promoted to video department manager. Duties included customer service, checking in movies, and processing new releases.

1993: Rocklines (Nacogdoches, TX)

Owner/manager of this spinoff from Millionaire Studios. This mall music location sold guitar strings, T-shirts, and accessories. This temporary kiosk in the University Mall was not allowed to obtain a permanent lease so the location was closed.

1990-1993: Millionaire Studios (Lufkin, TX)

Assistant manager and, later, co-owner of this mall music store. Retail sale of instruments, accessories, T-shirts, etc. as well as a singalong karaoke-style recording studio. Audio engineering for singers and small musical groups in a multitrack recording studio was also common. Some time was spent running the second location in Longview, TX.

1990-1995: Sub-Etha Software (Lufkin, TX)

Home based software company dealing in computer programs written for the Tandy/Radio Shack Color Computer and the OS-9 Operating System from Microware. Products were advertised and sold through a magazine with worldwide distribution. Products were written in Microsoft Basic, Microware Basic09, C, and 6809 assembly and included games, utilities, and applications. Over the years many computer conventions were attended in Atlanta, Des Moines, and Chicago. Company was shut down to prevent conflict of interest when accepting a position at Microware in 1995.

1988-1990: Radio Shack (Lufkin, TX)

Originally hired as part-time seasonal help but ended up staying three years. Duties included sales of consumer electronics, computers and accessories. Eventual position ("key holder") included opening/closing of store, daily paperwork and handling bank deposits.

1988: Walker Computers (Lufkin, TX)

Part time position at computer warehouse. Duties including Microsoft BASIC programming on IBM-PC/AT systems and handling daily sales operations.
